Can you change a front man successfully?

Neal Schon has just announced that he has found a new lead singer for Journey. Neal found the incredibly talented Arnel Pineda signing with his Filipino band Zoo on (of all things) YouTube. One wonders if it will be a new renaissance for Journey, only time will tell...

So this begs the question: Can a band change the frontman and still put out the same good quality product while keeping diehard fans interested? I wonder how one of my favorite bands, Jethro Tull, would fare under such a decision. Would you accept a new frontman in your favorite band if it meant that the sound quality was just like 'the good old days'?

i saw this happen with one of the all time great metal bands...maiden, and look what happened. people stopped coming, they didn't sell any albums. in fact, i never even picked one up. then they brought bruce back, and they are stronger than ever.

maiden rules....

He is amazing. I can't believe how much he sounds like Steve Perry. And for you other question it depends on the frontman. If the lead singer is the main focus of the band than I don't think you can replace him. When he/she is just another member than sure you can get someone else. Case in point is Van Halen. I thought Sammy Hager did a fine job. And with that band it always was about Eddie Van Halen anyway.

True about Van Halen! In the case of Tull, Ian's antics and stage persona are the reason many, many diehard fans fell in love with the band, so I'm not sure if he could be replaced as the frontman. Another singer might replace his voice (I haven't heard one yet who's even in the ballpark) but no one can replace the Ian we all came to know and love.

If you think that's good, listen to Arnel sing Sweet Child of Mine and Plush -- unbelievable.

I'll support this band just by the fact that they heard the talent in Arnel and didn't worry about the effect of having an asian frontman. I think he'll do a fine job as long as the whole band keeps focusing on the music. LIVE ON JOURNEY
